Caravaggio<\/i> is a two-act ballet created by\nacclaimed contemporary Italian choreographer Mauro Bigonzetti.
\nOriginally created for the Staatsballett Berlin, directed by Vladimir Malakhov\nin 2008, the ballet is inspired by the works of the painter Caravaggio,\nMichelangelo Merisi (1571\u20131610). It serves as a tribute to the intense drama\nand theatricality of the great Italian artist, whose revolutionary paintings\nbroke away from traditional models with an exceptional sensitivity and\nattention to the three-dimensional depiction of human nature\u2014both physical and\nemotional.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Mauro\nBigonzetti\u2019s aim is to bring to the stage the complexity of Caravaggio\u2019s\npersona, celebrating the facets that define both the man and the artist: on one\nside, his tormented inner world, driven by a deeply restless soul, and on the\nother, the narrative expressed through his art. Caravaggio<\/i>, following\nthe interrelation of these two aspects, thus becomes a psychological and\ndramatic ballet, whose dramaturgical \u201cmotifs\u201d recur through solos, duets,\ntrios, and quartets, interspersed with ensemble scenes that ease the tension\nand set the rhythm of an action fundamentally centered on the Caravaggesque\nself.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Thanks to\nthe minimalist set design and lighting, masterfully crafted by Carlo Cerri, the\nunion between these two worlds unfolds, enhancing the choreographic vision and\nelevating the movement of the dancers\u2019 bodies.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

The ballet\nis performed to music by Claudio Monteverdi, with selections from L\u2019Orfeo<\/i>,\nIl combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda<\/i>, L\u2019incoronazione di Poppea<\/i>,\nand the Settimo libro dei madrigali<\/i>. These are newly orchestrated into a\nsymphonic score by the Italian composer and conductor Bruno Moretti.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

The\npromoter and leading performer of Caravaggio<\/i> is Roberto Bolle, the\ncelebrated \u00c9toile of Teatro Alla Scala, who since the beginning of his career\nhas been an ambassador of Italian culture abroad and a master of ballet as an\nart form accessible to everyone. Thanks to Roberto Bolle and his production\nagency ARTEDANZA<\/b>srl, Caravaggio<\/i> has premiered in Italy in May\n2025, embarking on a tour that will reach Hong Kong in the spring of 2026.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Joining him\nin this ambitious project are some of the finest Italian and international solo\ndancers, along with a corps de ballet formed specifically for the production\nthrough auditions, involving around 30 freelance professional dancers. Named \u00c9toile of the Teatro Alla Scala in 2023, Nicoletta Manni, alongside her husband and principal dancer Timofej Andrijashenko, presents an unprecedented show that helps bring the beauty of great dance to the Italian public. In collaboration with the extraordinary dancers of the Teatro Alla Scala, she intends to share her joy of dancing in a varied and unique evening.<\/p>\n

An original show, rich in new proposals and high-level artistic collaborations, it debuted in Lecce in 2024 with outstanding success from both critics and the public.<\/p>\n

“La Gioia di Danzare”<\/em> (The Joy of Dancing) revisits the ultimate meaning of Nicoletta\u2019s eponymous book (2023), which traces her life inevitably intertwined with dance through a declaration of love for ballet that is also a journey of freedom and self-discovery.<\/p>\n

The program features excerpts from timeless classics such as Grand Pas Classique, Carmen, Swan Lake, and Le Corsaire, alongside engaging more contemporary pieces.<\/p>\n

Roberto Bolle, one of the greatest and most acclaimed ballet stars internationally, conceived Roberto Bolle and Friends<\/em> as a unique performance. No other dancer today can afford to select their favorite pieces and perform them alongside the best dancers of the moment, gathered from the leading theaters around the world. The declared goal of this Gala is to spread the art of great dance, retracing a century and a half of ballet history over the course of a single evening.<\/p>

For his Gala, Roberto Bolle assembles a prestigious group of \u00e9toile dancers, selecting them from the most famous international names, renowned in the best ballet companies worldwide. He personally chooses the pieces for his performance each time, selecting from the most beloved classical repertoire and the most celebrated 20th-century works, but not only that: in recent years, the Maestro has also ventured into digital experimentation, exploring new synergies between dance and technology. It is in this fusion of the classical with the ultra-modern and experimental that Roberto Bolle has found his distinctive and inimitable style.<\/p>

Roberto Bolle has brought the Gala to places never before reached by any dancer: the square of Milan\u2019s Cathedral and Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples, where he was followed by thousands of people.
